About the Event

Food of Work, Food of Celebration Work and celebration are universal activities in human culture. We work to grow and cultivate food for harvest, then celebrate its end with barbecues and festivals. We make or buy quick meals to sustain us at our job sites, offices, and homes as we care for our families, then prepare feasts to celebrate milestones and achievements. For both work and celebration, we have local customs, ingredients, and traditions. But we ALL have these local customs – the food of work and of celebration are both unique and shared; local and universal.

On February 26th, acclaimed Chef Ravi Kapur will join us to honor the foods of work and celebration that are local to Hawaii – and explore how they demonstrate both specific local custom and connections to people around the world. By celebrating both the food we eat, and the people who make it possible, we hope to build bridges across cultures, and geographies – bridges that can bring us closer to one another, help us broaden our horizons, and build lasting common ground.
I’m very much looking forward to this collaborative event with Common Ground and Ensemble. I was born and raised in Kailua, Oahu and always appreciate any opportunity to come home, especially when it involves discovering new ingredients and working with farmers, fishermen, and ranchers that are connected with the land. I believe that what will make this event special is the intention behind it. Now, more than ever, we need to celebrate the threads that connect us. If we take the time, with mutual respect and openness, I believe we can move towards unity. What better way to identify our shared identities and discover what connects us than through food? Since the beginning of time it was what brought us together, not just to satiate our appetites, but to nourish our souls. Hope to see you at Common Ground and hear your story.

What’s CG Foundation?

CG Foundation is the non-profit arm of Common Ground and aims to further the development of agriculture, arts and education in Hawaiʻi.

Kaua`i County’s General Plan states that agriculture represents our greatest opportunity for economic diversity and food sufficiency and is important to our island’s identity as a rural place. Yet despite efforts to boost agriculture production in Hawaii, traditional agricultural crops have declined 43% in the past 2 decades.  In addition, farmers need expanded and dependable markets to sell more niche crops and to increase the crop price per acre.

The CG Foundation addresses both needs by accelerating the growth trajectory of Kaua`i-made food and beverage companies and expanding the market for farmers’ niche crops.  The pandemic reinforced the need to diversify our economy, build more resilience in our food supply chain and underscored the vital importance of small business development for Kaua`i and our neighbor islands.
